The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride – Riding for Men’s Health
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride brings together motorcyclists from around the world who ride in classic and vintage style to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.
For the 13th time, around 500 motorcyclists will come together in Berlin in May to demonstrate for men’s health and suicide prevention. The good cause behind it: All riders and their friends are called upon to support men’s health and suicide prevention projects to the best of their ability with their donations. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride always takes place on the same day worldwide. Naturally, women also take part on their bikes.
The first Gentleman’s Ride in 2012 brought together 2,500 motorcyclists in 64 cities around the world. This year, over 120,000 participants are expected to take part, raising awareness of these important issues in around 1,000 cities in 100 countries. The Ride 2023 alone raised the equivalent of over 6 million euros for regional and international projects
The special thing about this demonstration is that the participants are dressed in particularly fine clothing and ride classic motorcycles. They wear shirts, vests, tweed suits or costumes and are on their best behavior. The motorcycles are usually café racers, bobbers, classic or retro machines, scramblers or converted motorcycles (custom bikes) of all kinds. The riders are between 16 and 80 years old. The Gentleman’s Ride in the capital will be accompanied by the large motorcycle squadron of the Berlin police.
If you want to take part in the DGR 2024, you need three things: a stylish motorcycle, the pleasure of dressing up and the desire to do something really good together with many like-minded people. If you are unsure how to dress, you can find a style guide and all other information at www.gentlemansride.com. For insurance reasons, anyone wishing to take part must register on the website before starting the ride.
This year, the Berlin ride starts at a historic location in Berlin-Mitte and then takes a route of around 30 kilometers through the city, passing many sights. Before setting off, there will be a rally at which the important topic of suicide prevention will be explained by an expert. There will also be an information stand with other experts on the subject.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa. The ride was inspired by a photo of Don Draper from the show Mad Men sitting on a classic motorcycle wearing his best suit. Mark thought that a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, while also connecting niche motorcycle groups.
The funds raised through The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will help support Movember’s work to tackle two of the most complex issues facing men worldwide: Prostate Cancer and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
